千風之歌的歌詞原本是一首印地安的詩歌，是一位印地安男子在妻子過世後，覺得了無生趣，準備帶兒子一起循著妻子的腳步而去， 但是就在他整理愛妻遺物的時候，發現她寫了一首詩，詩的內容告訴他，她將化作親人身邊的風、雪、陽光和星辰，並且告慰親人別再佇立於墳前哭泣，自己並沒有離去，而是以另一種姿態繼續守護著所愛。男子哀傷的心 因此獲得了撫慰，也打消自殺的念頭。

因為這首詩的意境優美深刻，在歐美和日本都分別被譜上不同的旋律傳唱。在美國"A Thousand Winds"曾被用在911的追悼會上朗誦，也被譜成合唱曲；而在日本，則被新井滿翻成日文歌詞，譜上曲，並由聲樂家秋川雅史演唱，唱片大賣五百萬張，轟動一時。
